Crossroads Bible Church Student Ministry
Discussion Questions & Notes
Sunday School Class: November 6, 2011.
Review: Communitas = Loving each other in a more profound way. A deeper form of community. In the first three weeks, we’ve defined this community’s membership, motivation and results (believers in the resurrection of Christ, the Kingdom values & unity based in others being more important than yourself). The second 3-weeks we focused on the nature of the Kingdom, it’s costs and perspectives on those who aren’t “in” yet (starts small & grows, carrying your cross daily and seeking diligently those who need the same grace you received). Last week, we start a new section dealing with how this deep community is enhanced by common experiences: Notably, Jesus turning water to wine and “cleansing” the Temple before Passover.
Discussion: Scene from “How To Train Your Dragon.” In what ways will this experience affect them? Why do you think so? What will this do to the long-term relationship of the Vikings?
Study: Matthew 17: 1--13.
WHEN does this event take place? WHO is there? WHERE do they go?
In v.2, what happens? WHAT does “transfigured” mean?
In v.3, WHO appeared and talked? WHY might this be significant?
In v.4, WHO talks and what is his suggestion? WHY might this be important?
In v.5, WHO speaks? WHAT is the content of the message? WHERE have we possibly heard this before (hint: Luke 3:22)?
In v.6, WHAT was the reaction of the disciples?
In vv. 7&8, WHAT does Jesus tell them to do and WHO is left?
In v.9, WHAT is the command Jesus gives them?
In v.10, WHAT is the question the disciples ask and WHY might this be important?
In vv. 11&12, HOW does Jesus answer the question and what is the reality Jesus tells them about?
In v.13, WHAT do the disciples now understand?

Discussion: 3 vignettes from “Dead Poets Society.” Note the “key ingredients” in the development of the “communitas.”
Study: John 2: 1--22.
WHEN does the event in 2:1&2 take place? WHO is there?
WHAT is the problem in vv. 3-5? WHAT can you make about Jesus’ response?
HOW does Mary react?
In vv. 6—11, WHAT does Jesus tell the servants to do? WHO drinks and what is his reaction?
In v. 11, HOW does John describe the event? WHAT did it do? WHAT was the reaction of the disciples?
WHAT is the date marker given in v.12?
WHERE does Jesus go and what does He find in vv. 13 & 14?
WHAT does He do in v. 15?
WHO does He address in v. 16? WHY might this be significant? WHO does this action favor?
WHAT O.T. verse does this bring to the disciples’ mind (use your Bible’s notes)?
WHAT reaction does this evoke in the leadership in v. 18? WHAT is not even mentioned?
HOW does Jesus respond in v. 18?
WHAT is the reaction in v. 19?
WHEN did this event come back into the disciples’ thoughts?

Discussion Questions & Notes
Sunday School Class: October 16, 2011.
Review: Communitas = Loving each other in a more profound way. A deeper form of community. Starts with the resurrection (1 Cor. 15). Connection of love and “feeding sheep.” (Jn. 21) First step: “attitude” of emptying yourself. (Phil. 1&2). The adventure of following (John 1 & Luke 5). We saw that the Kingdom viewpoint would unify the community, and last week we saw how Jesus taught on WHO would be in the Kingdom, notably “Gentiles.” Last week we looked at counting the cost of discipleship.
Discussion: List everything Will does wrong. What will he have to do to win April back?
Study: Luke 15: 1-32.
WHAT two groups are contrasted in verses 1&2? How are their attitudes different?
WHAT was the content of the grumbling?
WHAT is implied by the words “receives” and “eats with?”
In vv. 3—7:
WHAT is lost? WHO initiates the search? WHAT is the reaction?
WHAT is highlighted as the “point” of the parable? (verse 7)
In vv. 8—10:
WHAT is lost? WHAT is highlighted as the “point” of the parable? (verse 10)
In vv. 11—32:
In vv. 11&12, WHAT does the younger son ask for? WHAT does this “mean?”
In vv. 13—16, WHAT does he do with the money? WHAT adds to the problem?
WHAT is the end result of the two realities?
In vv. 17—19, WHAT does the son decide to do when he comes to his senses?
In vv. 20—24, WHAT is the father’s reaction? WHAT do you notice about v. 21
contrasted against v. 19?
In vv. 25—32, CONTRAST the attitude of the older son and the father?

High School Sunday School Class Notes for Oct. 9
Crossroads Bible Church Student Ministry
Discussion Questions & Notes
Sunday School Class: October 9, 2011.
We saw that the Kingdom viewpoint would unify the community, and last week we saw how Jesus taught on WHO would be in the Kingdom, notably “Gentiles.”
Discussion: If you join an extracurricular activity, what are the “costs” to you personally?
Study: Luke 14: 25--35.
From 14:23, we can see that…
In v. 25, WHO is there and WHERE are they headed? (context helps)
In v. 26, “hate” likely means…
A “disciple” simply means…
Compare & Contrast 9: 23 with this verse and verse 27:
Deny self =
Take up cross daily =
Follow =
WHAT question does Jesus ask in v. 28? WHY do you think he asks it?
There are 3 “costs” to consider from vv. 29—35:
From verse 29, the example of a building is used…
From verse 31, the example of military usage by a king is used…
And from verse 34, the example of salt is used…
