Sunday School Notes for November 6

Crossroads Bible Church Student Ministry
Discussion Questions & Notes
Sunday School Class: November 6, 2011.

Review: Communitas = Loving each other in a more profound way. A deeper form of community. In the first three weeks, we’ve defined this community’s membership, motivation and results (believers in the resurrection of Christ, the Kingdom values & unity based in others being more important than yourself). The second 3-weeks we focused on the nature of the Kingdom, it’s costs and perspectives on those who aren’t “in” yet (starts small & grows, carrying your cross daily and seeking diligently those who need the same grace you received). Last week, we start a new section dealing with how this deep community is enhanced by common experiences: Notably, Jesus turning water to wine and “cleansing” the Temple before Passover.

Discussion: Scene from “How To Train Your Dragon.” In what ways will this experience affect them? Why do you think so? What will this do to the long-term relationship of the Vikings?

Study: Matthew 17: 1--13.

WHEN does this event take place? WHO is there? WHERE do they go?

In v.2, what happens? WHAT does “transfigured” mean?

In v.3, WHO appeared and talked? WHY might this be significant?

In v.4, WHO talks and what is his suggestion? WHY might this be important?

In v.5, WHO speaks? WHAT is the content of the message? WHERE have we possibly heard this before (hint: Luke 3:22)?

In v.6, WHAT was the reaction of the disciples?

In vv. 7&8, WHAT does Jesus tell them to do and WHO is left?

In v.9, WHAT is the command Jesus gives them?

In v.10, WHAT is the question the disciples ask and WHY might this be important?

In vv. 11&12, HOW does Jesus answer the question and what is the reality Jesus tells them about?

In v.13, WHAT do the disciples now understand?

Communitas, Week #9: Matthew 13: 1-17.
Brent McKinney, Pastor of Student Ministries, teaching.
This morning, we’re resuming our study of “Communitas,” a deeper form of community. We’ve defined communitas, and we’ve seen how Christ taught the disciples about how the Kingdom unifies us, and now we’ll be in the 2nd lesson about how their experiences together caused a greater bond between them.

Don’t forget to fill out your “Hoots N Salutes” before class!

Change for a Buck: We’ll be sending $55 to Laura Poe for her mission trip to Haiti over Christmas Break. So, we’ll be starting over with our collection this week.
