Student Ministry “Not-Of-This-World” Photo Shoot, September 20, 2009, after
Sunday School class: Preparation Instructions

1. Choose what you’re going to wear as well as what else you want in the picture. Remember, if you’re on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, the photographer wants to capture something that is uniquely YOU. So, think through the clothes you’re going to wear, accessories you want (musical instruments, hats, sporting equipment, etc.) that say something about who you are and what you’re about!
2. Find a MEDIUM to write on that is NOT LARGER than 22” x 28”. IT CAN BE SMALLER, BUT NOT LARGER. It needs to be a light color that you can write LARGE & DARK ENOUGH for the words to be seen. It can be anything that size: An actual poster board you purchase, a sheet of butcher paper you cut to that size, a paint canvas, a cardboard box you cut out, a piece of plywood—USE YOUR IMAGINATION, and make sure it’s within size limits.
3. Design the sign that will be in the picture with you—EVERYBODY WILL HAVE THEIR SIGN IN THEIR PHOTO! That’s the point! You can choose if you’ll hold it or where you’ll put it in your picture but you will have a sign made BEFORE YOUR PHOTO SHOOT. You can choose from the following words or phrases, AND YOU NEED TO CONTACT BRENT to RESERVE YOUR PHRASE (each person is supposed to have something different than all the rest!) and they’re first come, first served, but ONLY THESE WORDS CAN BE ON YOUR SIGN and they need to be readable—so be choosy with what you want to put around/through/behind the words!

You can choose from the following words or phrases, but ONLY THESE WORDS CAN BE ON YOUR SIGN and they need to be readable—so be choosy with what you want to put around/through/behind the words!

Masterpiece Alien & Stranger Chosen
Reconciled Redeemed Ransomed
Forgiven Justified Set Apart
Transformed Not Conformed Regenerated
Free From The Law Washed Hidden with Christ
Sealed Perfected for All Time Accepted
Born Again New Creation Not of This World
Child of God Prince Princess
Co-Heir Citizen of Heaven Royal Priesthood
Made Complete In Christ Temple of the Holy Spirit
Child of the King A Work in Progress Waiting for My King
Not Condemned Living Abundantly At Peace with God

Any other signage choices MUST BE APPROVED BY BRENT beforehand!

4. Contact Brent and let him know for sure if you’re going to take part ASAP. Photo slots will be given in the order they are received either by text message or Facebook or e-mail to Brent@crossroadsbible.org.

5. If you have any questions, contact Brent ASAP!

Team Mississippi Information

I. Background.

Student missions at Crossroads has been a staple of the discipleship process since CBC has had a student ministry. We’ve been to the Navajo/Hopi nations, Holland, Haiti, Mississippi (serving a CBC-inspired church plant) and, of course, Juarez.

This year we intended to go to Juarez but after genuine concerns regarding health and safety, we began to look for alternatives. The one we found that fit our goals/objectives is serving the remaining victims of 2005’s Hurricane Katrina.

We’ll be working with the Waveland Citizens Fund, and you can check their website (www.reliefvolunteers.com) for full details.

II. Travel Information.

We’ll depart the Crossroads south parking lot at 6AM on Sunday, June 14. This means you’ll need to eat breakfast first, and be ON-SITE around 5:15AM. This will allow for final payments, packing, loading, etc. On June 14, we will stop for lunch and dinner and hopefully arrive at the camp (you can get photos of the camp on their website) at 6PM. We’ll set up camp, have our orientation session led by our guides, spend time in prayer and have a devotional, then get to bed.

We plan on returning Saturday, June 20, to the CBC south parking lot at approximately 7PM.

III. Cost.

The cost is $100 per student. Fundraising packets with full explanations were mailed out two weeks ago, and you can contact Brent for a copy if you haven’t already.

Many of you need to know that 75% of this trip is being underwritten by Crossroads Bible Church as we established a fund designed specifically to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. This fund was never fully used, and these previously designated gifts are being used for this trip.

IV. What to Bring.

Bible. Journal/pen.
Flashlight.
Work boots (please plan on wearing work boots while working).
Nail belt (similar to what we use in Juarez) and work gloves.
Jeans/t-shirts for 5 full days of work (no shorts, no exceptions).
Sleepwear and adequate socks/undergarments for humid climate.
One pair of clothes to relax at camp in (shorts & t-shirt, etc.)
Swimsuit. (we may have the opportunity to hit the beach during early evening; we may not)
Towel.
Pillow/bedding (i.e., sleeping bag…they provide bunk beds).
Mosquito spray/sunscreen/sunglasses/caps (to protect sunburned heads)
Toiletries.
Government issued photo I.D. (school ID, driver’s license, etc.—if you don’t have one, it isn’t mandatory, but highly recommended)
Insulated water bottle.

Please remember that you will be working in an extremely humid coastal environment for 8 hours per day. Make sure to factor lots of sweating! And, this is uniquely different than the arid climate of Juarez where you might sweat all day in the 100 degree heat but it would simply evaporate off. It isn’t necessarily uncommon to experience 90 degrees and 80% humidity, so keep that in mind.

V. Paperwork.

The only paperwork required on this trip is the “Authorization for Medical Treatment of a Minor Child” and the “Emergency Contact” sheet. These forms are available from the receptionist at CBC and WILL BE SENT VIA E-MAIL to our mailing list.

Note: The “Authorization” form MUST BE NOTARIZED! If we don’t have it in hand when we leave, you cannot go. However, this will only have to be done once for your child’s high school tenure as we keep them on file. To ensure we have yours on file, please e-mail Sherry@crossroadsbible.org and ask.

You only need to fill out another “emergency” form if: The contact information you gave us originally has changed since you submitted it. OR if your health insurance has changed since submission. THIS FORM MUST HAVE A COPY OF YOUR HEALTH INSURANCE CARD.

VI. Spending Money.

The spending money you will need: Two meals on Sunday, June 14. Souvenir money for the afternoon of Wednesday, June 17 (we may possibly sightsee in New Orleans, however that is not firm at this time), and two possible road meals on Saturday, June 20. (It is possible we may not stop for dinner that evening if we have a chance to be back at CBC near dinner time)

Any other money will be at your discretion. Also, adults will NOT hold spending money for teenagers.

VII. Electronics/Phones.

We recommend that Mp3 players remain at home. They cannot be used while working and we cannot guarantee their safety at the campsite. Any other electronics, such as video game systems, personal DVD players, etc., should remain at home. Additionally, re-charging of such items would be subject to extremely limited at the campsite. Finally, they detract from the building of relationships.

We do recommend that students have their mobile phones. However, their usage will be limited to certain periods of the day (for 30 minutes after wake up and 30 minutes before lights-out). It is expected that students will have their mobile phones turned completely off during work hours (8AM to 5PM daily) as well as during meetings and meals. We will have half an hour each night reserved for them if they’d like to call home, but we recommend that calls to friends be kept to 3 minutes or less and only during that time frame. Finally, remember that in coastal areas mobile phone reception is spotty at best.

VIII. Work Teams.

In the past, we’ve established teams before we left CBC. This year, due to the nature of the work, teams could be changing daily based on work to be done and skill/strength levels for each job. Please expect to make new friends on this trip and prepare to be flexible each morning as we assign teams to tasks.

There will be an orientation session the evening of June 14 in which Relief Volunteers will instruct us on procedures, etc.

It is expected that everyone will serve in the kitchen during the set up/clean up for each meal as assigned by the kitchen crew parents.

It is also expected that each person make a mix-CD of the music they’d like to listen to while driving. We will be spending up to 2 hours in vans daily (in addition to the drives from/to Texas) and unless you want to listen to the music Ian Cook chooses, well, just burn a CD so we don’t have to go there.

IX. Diet/Rest.

It is expected that each member will eat every meal (breakfast/lunch/dinner), as well as the provided snacks in-between. It will be a physically taking week and our cooks have designed a series of meals that appeal to teens and ensure plenty of protein and carbohydrates.

Also, a minimum of one gallon of water, in addition to the provided sports drinks, should be consumed each day.

Finally, bed times/lights out will be strictly enforced. Rest is vital to the trip’s success, as well as driver safety the night before we return home.

X. Questions/Comments.

Contact Brent@crossroadsbible.org for any questions or comments you may have.

We Have A Trip!!!

After making the decision not to go to Juarez this summer, we’ve been actively looking at alternatives for our students to serve. We’re excited to be a part of Katrina relief efforts that continue in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. You can check out the organization we’ll be partnering with here: http://www.reliefvolunteers.com.

Yes. That Hurricane Katrina. The one in 2005. Many within an hour’s drive of where we’ll be staying still have needs…and at this point, it’s often the “poorest of the poor” who need the help.

Interestingly, back in 2005, Crossroads had the opportunity to serve many of those fleeing the destruction and raised money to help out during that crisis. Our deacons have wrestled with what to do with the remaining funds that were given to that cause, and now some of those funds will give support to this trip!

So, here’s what you’ll need to know for now:

First, the trip will leave CBC on Sunday morning, June 14, 2009. We will return the early evening of Saturday, June 20, 2009. The cost per student will be $100, and we will begin sending out support letters on May 18. The cost per adult is $0. However, if you’re interested in making a donation of any amount, it would be appreciated.

Second, we do need adults to serve our students. We’ll need help with the kitchen, with driving, with construction/labor instruction, with first-aid, with organizing, etc. Simply respond to this message to sign up!

Third, we’ll begin sign ups immediately. Either today or tomorrow you will get an e-mail or message with a sign up form on it. The sign up period will end on May 17. Since they are two distinctly different trips, those that signed up for Juarez will need to sign up again for this one. And, if you didn’t sign up for Juarez, you can still sign up for this one!

Finally, thanks to all of you for your understanding and your patience in this process. It hasn’t been easy, but God has show Himself faithful, and I’m thankful for the reality that we have a chance to serve and He has graciously provided—even years ago—for this ministry to go on this trip.

Please let me know as soon as possible (if you’re a parent) your desire to go and if you’re a student, let’s get those sign ups in on time!

CBC Juarez Student Mission Trip Announcement

Dear Parents, Students and Ministry Leaders,

As you all know, the student ministry’s trip to Juarez to build homes for needy families has been a consistent event on our calendar for over a decade. The trip serves the purpose of exposing our students to world missions as well as providing our teens with a fantastic “bonding” opportunity. For many, it’s the introduction to the importance of loving our neighbors and using our blessings to serve others…a staple of our ministry emphasis over their four years of high school.

Like many of you, I’ve been reading media reports of escalating violence in Juarez in early 2009. Amor Ministries, the organization we’ve partnered with in recent years, reassigned their high school missions in Juarez to other parts of Mexico during Spring Break. This action caused us to reexamine our involvement for this year.

We assembled a group of ministry leaders at CBC, both paid staff and volunteers, and began to gather information from Amor staff, media reports, internet research and insights from people we know who work in and around Juarez. After looking at all the available information possible we began to think and pray through our decision.

After nearly six weeks of prayer and thoughtful deliberation, we believe that taking this trip to Juarez is NOT what God wants for our church or student ministry at this time. We realize the gravity of this decision, both as it affects not only our student ministry but also IMPACT 2009 and the corresponding vision CBC has for world missions. Please trust that this decision was not made lightly.

Also, we’d like for you to know that we’ve been diligent in seeking alternative ministries to take part in since early March. Thus far we’ve not been able to find a suitable ministry opportunity for our students that fits our philosophy of ministry, but we’ll continue to seek God’s will in this area and hope to find something soon. We’ll let you know as soon as possible if and when an opportunity is found. We do have a couple of strong leads, so please keep praying for what (if anything) God has for our ministry this summer.

As the Pastor of Student Ministries, I’d like to say thanks to all of you for your prayers during this time as well as for your support, encouragement, information updates, and leads on other options for trips. So many of you have been on this trip, know how deeply this ministry is needed by families in Juarez, and what a great experience it is for our students…and you know how hard it’s been as we’ve weighed the pros and cons of our decision. Again, thank you for you support and understanding.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to direct them to me at your earliest convenience.

In His Service and Yours,

Brent McKinney
Pastor of Student Ministries

Juarez Trip Update

Dear CBC Parents,

Like many of you, I’ve been hearing/reading news reports from Juarez, Mexico that have referred to rising levels of violence. Obviously, this is concerning to those of us who are planning to be a part of our annual mission trip to build homes June 13-20, 2009. I’ve gathered from your e-mails that rumors abound. It’s my desire to quell the speculation and let you know where the leadership of Crossroads Bible Church stands.

First of all, it is true that Amor Ministries has re-directed high school mission trips for the months of March and April, 2009. This has affected some churches in our area as their student trips were postponed. I do feel it’s important for you to know that Amor took this action because of parental perception of the dangers rather than any actual danger their teams have experienced. Their college/adult trips are continuing as planned during these months.

Second, rest assured that we are actively monitoring the situation by talking to our contacts who cross the border daily as well as through “live chats” (you can read their official response to the U.S. Government Mexico Travel Advisory--NOT WARNING-- here)and on-line “conference calls” (you can listen to the audio of that call here)that Amor has provided in which they address the issues of major concern to churches and youth ministries. The Amor response has links to the official U.S. government web page.

Finally, know that it is our intent to do the very best we can to ensure the safety of our students. No trip or experience is worth putting their well-being at risk.

We are aware of most of the concerns and are evaluating our options through Amor in Juarez accordingly. We have assembled a committee consisting of CBC staff, mission board representatives and elders who will make a decision on this trip as soon as possible. We plan to communicate what we know at a PARENT’S ONLY meeting on March 22, 2009, at 10:45AM in the Dungeon. If you have any questions, that would be an excellent opportunity to ask those directly. Please plan on attending this meeting.

One last thing: We are actively looking at alternatives should Amor continue their current policy regarding students or should we decide it to be unwise for us to go to Juarez this year

Again, thank you for your concern. It’s comforting to know that so many of you are concerned for CBC’s involvement in world missions as well as serving our student ministry by providing us with information you come across. I’d invite you to pray for our leadership as we seek God’s will regarding this opportunity.
