Class Notes for October 2

Crossroads Bible Church Student Ministry
Discussion Questions & Notes
Sunday School Class: October 2, 2011.

Review: Communitas = Loving each other in a more profound way. A deeper form of community. Starts with the resurrection (1 Cor. 15). Connection of love and “feeding sheep.” (Jn. 21) First step: “attitude” of emptying yourself. (Phil. 1&2). The adventure of following (John 1 & Luke 5). Last week, we saw that the Kingdom viewpoint would unify the community.

Discussion: Scene from “Inception”

Reviewing a main theme of the Sermon on the Mount, look at Matthew 5:20…

Study: Luke 13: 17—35. (likely about 2.5 years after the Sermon on the Mount)

Based on verse 17, what do you think the mindset of the “opponents” would be?

(v.19) The kingdom of God is like a mustard seed, which might indicate…

(v.21) The kingdom of God is like leaven, which might indicate…

Based on verses 22—30:

(v.23) The “flavor” of the question is uniquely…

(v.24) The response is to enter by the…
There is a tie to the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 7:13-15)…

(v.25) The head of the house gets up and…

(v.26) What is the response of the outsiders to the homeowner’s action?

(vv.27—30) What will the homeowner say? Psalm 6:8 adds to the discussion…

Wailing and gnashing of teeth…
Who will be there? (v.29)

Based on verses 31—35:

(v.31) Who enters and what is their advice? Do you think it is genuine?
(v.32) What does Christ think of Herod? What assumptions can you make?

(vv.33—35) What observations can you make about Jerusalem? How will you know
when the time is fulfilled?

Study: Matthew 5, 6 & 7.

Background: Matthew 2:2, 3:1&2 & 4:17 give us the “message,” which is…

Sept. 4 Sunday School Class Notes

Crossroads Bible Church Student Ministry
Discussion Questions & Notes
Sunday School Class: September 4, 2011.

From the video of Alan Hirsch (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETN67tbrvX4)
• You have to be loving, you have to be serving, you have to do it together in order to actually achieve your mission because you’re never going to achieve it otherwise. So, communitas takes place along the way of trying to do something that requires that we learn to love each other in a deep & more profound way as a group of brothers and sisters...
o What is exciting about this? What is scary?

• A little danger is a good thing…One of the bad things about middle class culture is its’ obsession safety, security, comfort & convenience…so the Gospel becomes this kind of civil religion that really just affirms my lifestyle…it becomes a country club atmosphere and not a threat…I don’t experience adventure or journey or quest over there.
o Do you agree with his observations about middle-class culture? Why/not?
o Assuming he’s correct, what practical steps should we take to avoid the “country club atmosphere?”

Study:
John 10: 10 & 10: 27-28.
Why did Christ come?

1 Corinthians 15.
What is the Gospel according to vv. 3 & 4?

How important is the resurrection according to vv. 14 & 15, 19?

John 21.
How does the resurrection “tie-in” to “communitas?”

Possible Applications:
Quotes on Communitas:

“Communitas is a community formed in the context of an ordeal, a challenge, a task, a mission, that requires each player to find each other in a new, significant way to get the job done.”—Alan Hirsch

“You have to be loving, you have to be serving, you have to do it together in order to actually achieve your mission because you’re never going to achieve it otherwise. So, communitas takes place along the way of trying to do something that requires that we learn to love each other in a deep & more profound way as a group of brothers and sisters...”—Alan Hirsch

Mind Vitamins for Possible Applications:

“A question we pose is this: What is it about the holiness of Jesus that caused ‘sinners’ to flock to him like a magnet and yet managed to seriously antagonize the religious people? This question begs another, even more confronting question: Why does our more churchy form of holiness seem to get it the other way around—to comfort the religious and antagonize the sinners? Jesus’ brand of holiness (the true form) didn’t seem to deter the sinners from wanting to get up close and personal with him.”—Alan & Debra Hirsch

“We so easily impose a cultural form on the people and the groups we hope to reach with the love of Jesus. We so often make the gospel synonymous with a bland, middle-class conformity and thereby alienate countless people from encountering Christ. How often have we seen public opinion polls that reflect the attitude of ‘Jesus, Yes! Church, No!’”—Michael Frost & Alan Hirsch

“He [Jesus] was notorious (yes, that’s the right word) for hanging out with the wrong types. In contrast with today, when so much of our Christianity is being with the right people in the right places at the right times, Jesus was always in the wrong places with the wrong people, at the wrong times, according to the religious establishment. We want to say that this is the Jesus we must rediscover to balance our excessively sober images of our Lord. We need his model of holy laughter, of his sheer love of life, of his infectious holiness, of his common people’s religion, for our day. We want to say that being Christlike is not only hard work, it’s also loads of fun—you get to do what Jesus did and hang out with the interesting people…Being Christlike gives us a positive model of engagement, and this is why we need to imitate Jesus as our primary model for mission and evangelism.”—Michael Frost & Alan Hirsch

CBC’s YEAR OF GONZO STUDENT ART UPDATE:
September’s Project: Book Spine/DVD Spine Poetry.
Take a book or DVD and stack them up in such a way that the titles create a poem. Then take a photograph of that poem and turn it in by Sunday, September 25. You can use masking/painter’s tape to eliminate unnecessary words/author’s names, etc. if need be.
You can still turn in July’s “Truth Telling” and August’s “Black Out” art if you still want to do those, too!
October’s project: Random Acts of Kindness Index Cards (explanation once we get past the September project)

See You At The Pole, September 28. Check your local school campus for details.

To make sure you’re in the informational loop:
Parents, send an e-mail to Brent@Crossroadsbible.org and ask to be added to the e-mail list (please include the gender and year of graduation of your students).
Anyone can get the announcements on our Blogspot. Simply type in “cbchighschool . blogspot. com.” Maybe “favorite” that page, huh? And, you can follow BrentMcKinney on Twitter). For students only, if you aren’t getting text updates from Elli (she sent out a test text a few weeks ago so if you didn’t get it, you aren’t on it) you’ll want to send her your name and number!
We do have some changes we’ll be making for the Fall that will help us get the word out as efficiently as possible, so watch this space for updates!

*Don’t forget to pray for Johan in Columbia and Guerson in Haiti. We’ll be getting a new student to replace Kerlande (who “graduated”) this week, too!
