SS Lesson, Dec. 5

Crossroads Bible Church Sr. High Student Ministry
Sunday School Class Notes, December 5, 2010.
Knowing Christ, Week #14. Wrap-Up, 1 Peter 1.

Discussion Starter: Sitting at school during a friendly lunchtime discussion. The person sitting across from you says a few things, such as, “I think people are good deep-down. I’m a good person.” Among other ideas, they say, “I don’t like Christians because their religion is just a bunch of rules and regulations that give them a crutch to go through life with.” One last question they pose is, “What does the death and alleged resurrection of a 1st century Jewish carpenter have to do with how we live our lives in 2010? Taking them one at a time, how do you respond?

1 Peter 1: A Chance to Review.

How are we described in v.1?

In verse 2, why is he writing?

In verse 3, what has Jesus Christ done for us?

In verses 4 & 5, what are the results of this reality?

In verse 6—9, what are some of the benefits of “various trials?”

In verses 10—12, what happens after “careful search & inquiry?”

In verses 13—16, based on these things, what are we to “do?” Why?

In verses 17—21, how are we to view our lives now? What role did Christ play? When was this role known?

In verses 22—25, what should be the results of Christ’s work? Why?

Applications from the semester:

The “great problem of the Bible” is how does ________________________ man and a __________________ God become reunited.

The reasons the new covenant is superior to the old covenant are (2 Cor. 3: 5--18)

The work of Christ changed our ___________________________ (Eph. 2:10)

We can now live in the ____________________ (Galatians 5), giving thanks, leading to peace.

Knowing Christ, Week #8. Importance of the Ressurrection.

Review:

The “GREAT PROBLEM of the BIBLE”: How can __________________________ people be made “right” in the eyes of a God who is _____________________.

Our iniquities (sin)…
The wages of sin…

This problem is two-fold problem demands a two-fold solution:

Discussion Starter: Watch the scene from “Dead Poets Society.” What does Professor Keating take his students to stand before? Why might this be significant? Who does he compare himself to by inferring the Walt Whitman reference? Why might this be significant? What is the point of the poem read by Mr. Pitts? What question does he ask referencing the boys in the photo? What is his charge to the class? Why do you think this scene has become one of the most memorable scenes in the last 25 years?

Ephesians 2: 1—10. A Key CBC Student Ministry passage.

In verse 1, what WERE we?

Trespasses = sins =

How did we formerly walk and live according to verse 2 & 3?

What were we “by nature?” (review from last week: Why is this necessary?)

CONTRAST in v.4: BUT…

God is rich in… Has great…

Verse 5: God made us...

This is in the perfect tense, which means…

Verse 6: What other two things did God do?

Side note: John 10: 10

Verse 7: WHY would He do this?

A reminder in verses 8 & 9 on WHO did the work:

In verse 10: We are his… Greek word:

Why were we created?

Since we were created for this, what is the natural conclusion?

2 Corinthians 5: 14-17, An Understanding of Our Standing Before God:

In verse 14, WHAT controls us? Greek word highlights…

In verse 15, if He died for all, what else did He do for all?

In verse 16, HOW are we to recognize those that are in a relationship with Christ?

Knowing Christ, Week #7. The Importance of the Cross.

The “GREAT PROBLEM of the BIBLE”: How can __________________________ people be made “right” in the eyes of a God who is _____________________.

Genesis 3: 1—7:

Compare verse 3 with 2:17. Was Eve correct?
In verse 6, what 3 things give insight into her motivation?
In 3: 19, what is the end result?

Isaiah 59: 1-2: Our iniquities (sin)…

Romans 6: 23: The wages of sin:

This problem is two-fold problem demands a two-fold solution:

Psalm 11: 4-6 shows us that God’s response to evil, because of His holiness, has to be…

Discussion Starter: Watch the scenes from “Rachel Getting Married.” How does Kim describe herself & how long has she been clean? What are her thoughts on God and His forgiveness? What insight does she give as to why she turned to drugs? In the scene with her mom, what question does she ask? Why do you think she asks it? Do you think she wrecks the car on purpose? Why or why not? If so, where do you think she “stands” in her rehabilitation? If her family said, “We love Kim just as she is and don’t want her to change,” would you question that nature of their love? Why would they want to “rehabilitate” her, anyway?

Forgiveness is _____________________________________ if there aren’t real _____________________________________.

Sunday School Lesson for Oct. 3

Crossroads Bible Church Sr. High Student Ministry
Sunday School Class Notes, October 3, 2010.
Knowing Christ, Week #6. Law & Grace/Law of Love.

Discussion Starter: Watch the scene from “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.” What is Jeannie’s issue? When the “thug” offers a potential option, why does she say that she can’t do that? What is the thug’s diagnosis? Does Jeannie agree? What is the solution to the diagnosis? Which of these characters do we like more & why? What change do you see in Jeannie and why do you think she does?

Galatians 5:

Verse 1: Why did Christ set us free? What is the assumed response? (“therefore…”)
Verse 4: What causes us to “fall from grace?”
Verse 6: What doesn’t mean something? CONTRAST: What does?
Verses 7—12: What were they doing & what happened? How was this caused? What is Paul’s logic in distancing from false teaching? What is his desire for the false teachers?

Verses 13—15: If verse 1 is true, what is the caution Paul gives us? How do we avoid this? What is the fulfillment of the Law?

Verses 16—24: What is the command in v. 16? If we do this, what will NOT happen? What two entities are at odds with each other? What does the Spirit keep us from doing? If we are under the Spirit, what no longer applies?

Examples of the flesh:

(is this a complete list? What happens to those that practice these things?)

Fruit of the Spirit:

Verses 25 & 26: What is the assumption? What is the warning?

Sunday School Notes for the Weekend

Crossroads Bible Church Sr. High Student Ministry
Sunday School Class Notes, September 19, 2010.
Knowing Christ, Week #4. Law & Grace/The New Covenant.

Discussion Starter: Read “The Preamble to the Declaration of Independence” (on the back of this sheet). What are they saying they are going to do? What are the reasons they intend to do this? What differences can you discern from the “old” government and what they’d like for the “new” one to be? How would this be taken by the “old” government? How would this be seen by those wanting “new” things?

Jeremiah 31: 31—34:

WHAT is coming? WHO is involved?
In v. 32, HOW did each party do with the “old covenant?”
HOW is this contrasted with the previous one, in vv. 33-34?

Matthew 26: 26—29, Luke 22: 19&20:

WHO is Jesus with? WHAT were they doing?
WHAT does Jesus give them to drink and WHAT does He say it symbolizes?

At this point, the demands of the law included…

Hebrews 8: 1—13:

HOW is Christ described in vv. 1&2?
According to vv. 4&5, how are the “gifts acoording to Law” serving mankind?
In v. 6, HOW is CHRIST’S PRIESTHOOD viewed?
What is the CAUSE/EFFECT seen in verse 7?

According to verses 8—13, what CONTRASTS do you find in these verse against the Mosaic Covenant?

In the first part of verse 10, where will the Law be?
According to the rest of verse 10, there will no longer be…
In verse 11, WHO gets access to God?
Look at Hebrews 10:1 (from 8:5) and 8:12, and WHAT is different?

Sunday School Lesson for Sept 12

Knowing Christ, Week #3. Introduction to Law & Grace.

Discussion Starter: In this clip from the 1998 movie “Les Miserables,” What do we discover about Jean Valjean’s past? Why do we like Bishop Myriel from the dinner discussion? What would’ve been Jean’s future had the Bishop’s wife had her way when Jean was arrested? What is the Bishop’s motivation to let Jean off the hook? How could this moment change Jean’s future? How do you think Jean’s world perspective would change and why?

Why is a discussion of Law & Grace even important?

1 John 4: 17—19: It affects how…

Ephesians 4:32: It affects how…

It explains our____________________for living the Christian life.

What do we mean when we say “LAW?”

It is a __________________ that was _____________________ by God Himself and then it

was ________________________ by the nation of Israel (Exodus 19:3-6, 24:4-8)

It contained_________________ for obedience and _______________ for disobedience.

It lasted from _______________________until it was ____________________in Christ.
(Galatians 3:24-26)

There are general and specific purposes of The Law. Some of these are…

Galatians 4: 1—7:
COMPARE & CONTRAST slaves & children in vv. 1&2.
WHAT “were” we in verse 3 and WHAT was our situation?
WHAT is the contrast in verse 4?
In verse 5, WHAT was the reason?
WHAT are the benefits to us in verses 5—7?

Sunday School Notes, August 15

Crossroads Bible Church Sr. High Student Ministry
Sunday School Class Notes
August 15, 2010: Overview of Hebrews (“5 Warnings”).

Discussion Starter: Listen to the song “Once in a Lifetime” by the Talking Heads (lyrics on the reverse side of this page). Keep in mind two key questions to ask when dealing with media are: 1) WHAT is the message? And 2) HOW am I getting that message?

• What do you think the message of the song is? Why do you think this?
• How did you “get” that message?

Study:

First Warning: Hebrews 2: 1—4. What is the beginning of distance between people & God? How should a person in this place respond?

2nd Warning: Hebrews 3: 12—15. What is the next step? What are some things we can do by way of response listed in chapters 3 & 4?

3rd Warning: Hebrews 5: 11—6:6. What is the 3rd step? What is the encouragement for someone in this stage?

4th Warning: Hebrews 10: 26—35. What is the 4th step? Starting in 10:19-24 as well as in the main section, what helps us to move out of this station in life?

5th Warning: Hebrews 12. From vv. 4—13, what is the result if you don’t “adjust” in the other stages? In vv. 14—17, what should our response be if we find ourselves here?

Sunday School Notes, August 8, 2010

Crossroads Bible Church Sr. High Student Ministry
Sunday School Class Notes
August 8, 2010: Overview of Colossians.

Discussion Starter: Two quotes from “Almost Christian: What the Faith of Our Teenagers is Telling the American Church” by Kenda Creasy Dean.

“The most likely explanation for Moralistic Therapeutic Deism is simply that we reap what we sow. We have received from teenagers exactly what we have asked them for: assent, not conviction. Compliance, not faith. Young people invest in religion precisely what they think it is worth—and if they think the church is worthy of benign whatever-ism and no more, then the indictment falls not on them, but on us.”
*Do you think this accurately reflects the reality of churches in our area? Why/not? Give examples.

“The fruit of a consequential Christian faith is holiness, not niceness, which is not a course for the faint of heart. If the Bible is any indication, holy people make us uncomfortable. They take sacrificial risks on behalf of others; they are disarmingly wise and often, disconcertingly weird. They expose us with their honesty. Teenagers on this trajectory find ninety-five things wrong with the church, nail the list to the door, and call the press. Yet in their faith is the passion of God, who empowers them for mission and calls them out of their comfort zones so they can call us out of ours.”
*Do you think this kind of faith is realistic? What would the “costs” be to you personally if you were to move from “nice” to “holy?” What would the benefits to our local church be?

Study:

In 1:9, what does Paul ask for the church at Colossae to be filled with?
In 1:10-12 there are 7 reasons WHY he wants this. List them.
In 2:6, what is the cause/effect statement?
In 2:7, there are 4 characteristics of what that “looks like.” List them.
In 2:8, what are we to guard against?
In 3: 12-17, what are we to “put on?” What are we to “let” happen? If we “let” these things transpire, what will the result be?
In 4: 2-6, what are we to do that will help our relationship to God (v.2)? What are we to do regarding our relationship to others (v.5 & 6)

Announcements, July 4

Crossroads Bible Church Senior High Student Ministry July 4, 2010 Announcements

H.S. Sunday School July 4, 2010.
10:45—11:50AM, in the Dungeon.
Brent McKinney, teaching. Summer Series: 1 Peter
This Week: Chapter 1, The Proper Perspective on “Now”

High School Student Ministry Food Drive!
All of July—Beginning Sunday, July 4, and ending the 25th.
The student ministry portion of the CBC summer food drive is to get 300 boxes of Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (the middle school is providing bags of rice). This means that each high school student needs to bring 2 boxes per week—or 8 at one time—to help us reach our goal. We hope everybody will take part in this great opportunity to serve our community through helping a local food pantry stock their shelves during the difficult summer months! Simply purchase the mac & cheese and put it on the Dungeon stage. We’ll box it up and make sure it gets where it needs to go!

Wednesday Nights @ CBC: July 7, 2010.
Come eat dinner together in the CBC Café at 6:11PM (this week: Rosa’s Café is providing dinner—suggested donation is $5)
Then we’ll have class from 7:01PM to 7:44PM in The Dungeon.
Summer Topic: The Practical Spiritual Life
July 7 Teacher: Brent McKinney
July 14 Teacher: Sharon Gelnett

Over, please.
Don’t go see “Despicable Me” before we go as a group on Sunday, July 11, after lunch/Sunday School! More details via FB once times are released!
